CUMBERLAND ESTATE The Cumberland Estate is centred around Cockermouth Castle, one of the Percy family strongholds dating from early in the 12th century. The Percys, great magnates in the north, held or temporarily forfeited their estates according to the tides of their political fortunes. Shakespeare celebrated the deeds of the first earl and his son Harry Hotspur, and throughout the 15th century their descendants were involved in rebellion or fought on the Lancastrian side during the Wars of the Roses. The Estates also still own the ruins of Egremont Castle a few miles further south on the west coast of Cumbria in the Town of Egremont where it is open to the public The Estates today are in the ownership of Lord Egremont, a descendant of the Percys, and his family. Activities on the Cumberland Estate include salmon fishing, let farms, a handful of cottages, minerals including slate quarries and an iron ore mine at Florence Mine. There is also some forestry.
